Racking in the Miles

I know that a lot of runners set mileage goals for the year.  I’ve never considered this until recently.  With the upcoming “official” Dopey training schedule, the miles are going to add up quickly.  With every run that I complete, I add a little sticker in my planner.  Hooray Etsy!

To date (May 30th) I’ve logged 92.9 miles.  I know this isn’t much considering we’re approaching the halfway mark of the year.  However, with bragging rights in tow, I informed my dad of the miles this year.  He’s sitting at 154.4.  (heavy sigh)  Guess I need to up my game!

This past February I participated in my first Disney challenge, as well as my first half marathon–Disney’s Glass Slipper challenge.  This Disney challenges is a 10k, followed by a half the following morning.  That’s 19.3 miles.  With Dopey  happening a month before Princess Weekend, I sadly accepted that I would not be able to run 48.6 miles, followed by another X miles the following month.  Emotionally–It. Really. Hurt.

I kept looking at Instagram of everyone signing up.  The “freebie” sign up for previous race weekend runners was closed–which guaranteed you a place.  The passholder sign up was closed.  And it’s been a good amount of time since it opened to the general public.  Everything, but the half is sold out.  I began looking on Instagram for any clues as to which princess it would be.  Not to mention, it’s the 10th anniversary of the half, and the 5th of the challenge (again…sold out).  After seeing tiny glimpses of crowns and roses, it appears to be Aurora, who is my all time favorite princess.  I’ve already missed out on the challenge, and that cool 5th anniversary medal.  I couldn’t miss out on celebrating Aurora, and a 10th anniversary medal.  So I made the rational, or irrational, decision to sign up for the half.  THAT’S RIGHT!  ANOTHER PRINCESS HALF MARATHON.

Since all of my favorite races are discontinued, Princess Weekend is now my favorite race weekend.  So many women out on the course, of all heights and sizes.  It’s so great to be with women, sharing the same experiences, through a race geared towards us.  Everyone is so encouraging of one another.  People don’t bark at you to get out of the way, as girls job by there’s GOOD music blasting from ear buds, everyone politely apologizes when you bump into one another.  There’s laughter, there are tears.  And everyone is experiencing the same joy.

As excited (and terrified) as I am for Dopey, I’m pretty darn stoked for princess.  Can’t wait to see who the princess is when they officially announce it!

Hi readers!  Sorry for the inactivity.  Between getting engaged, buying a house, getting married, and everything in between–life has been really busy.  We haven’t been out sight seeing in quite a while.  As the summer approaches, most of you will be on amazing road trips, vacations, going to camp, having BBQs, etc.  This would be a great time for visiting off the beaten track tourist locations within the state, buuuuuuuuuuuuut, I have other plans…Dopey Challenge training!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with runDisney, the Dopey Challenge is a 4 day racing event held in January.  It includes a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and marathon.  That’s 48.6 miles.

Now, I don’t consider myself a runner in any shape, fashion, or form.  I grew up figure skating and despise running.   I walk/jog, and keep about a 13-14 minute mile pace on a good day.  Believe it or not, skating is easier than running (to me at least).

I began my running journey in the spring of 2013.  The very first time out the door took 45 minutes to walk 2 miles.  I thought…I was going…to die.  I wondered why I ever dreamed of signing up for the Disney Princess Half one day, which was the ultimate goal. That May I “ran” my first 5k at the Color Me Rad fun run.  At the time I was SO scared about not completing the course.  Looking back…the whole point was to walk or jog 3.1 miles so you could get coated in colored corn starch.  How could you not cross the finish line!?  In August of ’13 I ran an actual timed 5k at Lowry Park Zoo.  That was intimidating; seeing all the serious runners up front, stretching, chomping at the bit to get started.  I was happily in the back of the pack.

The following year was my first runDisney event–the Happy Haunted 5k trail run, which, sadly, is no more.  It wound you through Disney’s Wide World of Sports through the trail.  They had some pretty cool character stops, including the Big Bad Wolf!  From then on, I was hooked (as is everyone participating in a Disney race).  Since then I’ve run the Everest Challenge, which was a 5k followed by another 3ish miles of scavenger hunt clues, through Animal Kingdom.  I wish Disney still offered this race, it was a blast!  Two Princess 10ks, one Princess half (GOAL MET!), one Dark Side 5k, two Dark Side 10ks, the summer runDisney virtual run series, and the Lightning’s Bolt Run.

My Dad has been my running partner through this entire journey, with the exception of the two Princess 10ks.  Those are for Mom and I.  Recently, my husband participated in his first 5k–it was Star Wars themed so he was sold.  When my Dad said he was signing up for the Dopey, I couldn’t let him have all the glory!  And thus, here I am.  Googling race recaps, making running schedules, and blogging about the upcoming experience.

The training looks to be more of a chore than the actual event; jogging around the neighborhood, over and over and over to get those miles in…zzz.  Although, waking up at 3:00AM for four days in a row doesn’t sound pleasant in the least.  Training for the full marathon, you’d have to jog around the neighborhood 6.5 times (sounds fun right!?).  As nice as the winding sidewalk is, with the ponds, the trees, and squirrels and ducks, it can get a bit monotonous.  Definitely going to look for some backup trails.  Or run Bayshore Blvd 6.5 times over.
